Clovis — photographer and travelling artist

Born in Strasbourg during the last millennium, Clovis is a photographer and travelling artist whose works capture the essence of travel and humanity. His artistic path began in childhood, deeply influenced by his family environment. Son of a stylist-designer, Clovis grew up amid exhibitions at his father's side. These events offered him an enchanted universe in which he discovered the most varied craft works. This early immersion in a world of imagination and creativity profoundly shaped his artistic vision. His photographic career truly began in adolescence, thanks to the mentorship of professional photographer Patrick Darlot. The latter, alongside passing on his passion for photography, also reinforced Clovis's deep desire to travel.

His main themes are, without ambiguity, travel — more precisely nature, and human encounters. Contemplative and fascinated by the strength and beauty of natural landscapes. For him, nature has shaped wonders that Man will never equal. His photographs of human encounters seize expressions, glances and gestures, capturing in an instant the stories and deep emotions of a life. He says, for example, that people's hands in particular symbolise their experiences and lived stories. Clovis has travelled extensively throughout his life, from Europe to Africa, from the north to the south of America, without forgetting South-East Asia and Oceania. He has gathered many thoughts and images, in memory as much as through writing and photography.

In 2024, he met a Haitian artist who encouraged him and pushed him to broaden his fields of action by engaging with other artistic disciplines. It was then that Clovis revealed his first photographs to the world by holding a photo exhibition in May 2024. Although it was his first exhibition, it marks the beginning of a series of ambitious projects. Among his future plans, Clovis dreams of continuing to travel the world to capture humanity and nature in all their splendour.

A buoy facing the sea

The aim of this residency is to deepen my research on the populations of the eastern coast of Central America and the Caribbean. My project highlights the historical and contemporary interactions of these peoples with their oceanic environment, focusing in particular on the Garifuna, Mosquito and Creole communities, whose culture and traditions are intimately linked to the sea. This project explores how these communities perceive and protect their heritage while responding to the challenges of environmental change and globalisation.

My objective: to capture, through portraits and scenes of daily life, the resilience, richness and cultural diversity of these populations, while documenting their unique relationship with the ocean. This artistic residency at Intermondes La Rochelle is essential to my research, granting access to the city's archives related to the colonial period. And so to highlight my photographs and move forward in designing an exhibition.

An almost perfect world

This exhibition at the Haute École des Arts du Rhin (HEAR) in Strasbourg was a remarkable moment, at the heart of the region's new generation of artists; it gave me the opportunity to show my work to my peers.

I offered this visual exploration questioning the borders between the dreamed world and our dystopian reality, allowing you to be carried by works that interrogate our everyday lives, questioning the illusions of modernity and the paradoxes of our existence. Between false memory and unsettling reality, each image invites a reflection on the very essence of our perception, revealing fragments of beauty and trouble hidden in the ordinary.

From Mexico to Nicaragua

Step into a visual journey through the dazzling landscapes from Mexico to Nicaragua, passing through the majestic volcanoes of Guatemala and the picturesque coasts of Belize.

After two years of exploration across Mexico and Central America, I am delighted to share a glimpse of what I discovered, but also felt, throughout this journey. This trip allowed me to immerse myself in varied and vibrant cultures, stretching from the Pacific Ocean to the Caribbean Sea.

My track

During the 2023/2024 school year, together with the boarding students of Lycée Heinrich Nessel, we undertook the creation of posters printed on metal plates to decorate their dormitory. As part of this project, students, grouped by track, had to find an idea, then design a logo and a visual representing their respective stream. After much reflection, paper sketches, the use of software and image libraries, plus a few touches of retouching, here are their reactions to the result of a fully realised project!
